The monumental arrogance of Richard C. Hoagland

James Concannon writes:

If I'd done nothing productive other than writing a couple of books since 1983, I think I'd tend to keep quiet about my résumé. But Hoagland is so in love with his achievement of 40 years ago that he proclaims it stridently as though it were current.

Today marks the first anniversary of my being banned from Hoagland's FB page. I'd been asking questions. Insistently -- not deferentially, but not rudely either. To me they were just the obvious questions that anybody with some training in physics would have to ask after reviewing Hoagland & Bara's work. For example:

How many shuttle launches and landings conform to your "ritual alignment model"?

You have said the "castle" is suspended by a cable about 7 miles above the Lunar surface. What are the top ends of the cable attached to?

You have written that hyperdimensional physics is based on Maxwell's original 20 quaternion equations. Which of the quaternions have you actually used in your calculations?

I got no answers. Instead, I got a ban. In banning me, Hoagland came up with this utterly breathtaking demonstration of sheer ego (this is absolutely verbatim, from my records):

I"m somewhat surprised that this is seen as ANY kind of "legitimate" discussion point; this is, so Facebook has informed me (by putting MY name at the top of the page)--

My "room."
...
The idea that I should then have to put up with "repeated, malcious assaults on my own character -- in "my room" -- or suffer even more outlandish attacks on my decades-long, demonstrated scientific competence [just how many of these "critics" have consulted for a major television network (and a "living legend" at that network at same time) -- both, BEFORE they were even 23?]--

And then, went on to consult for NASA!

That I should NOT simply "throw these bums out of my 'house' "(to use YOUR apt metaphor ...) ... is simply cracked.

I also will NOT argue"with "fake people" -- whose SOLE reason for coming here ... and then, " hiding under a deliberately false identity," is to AVOID the normal social ACCOUNTABILITY that comes with "face-to-face communication"-- while getting the vicarious thrill of attacking "the Big Man" ... in front of countless thousands of his "fans."

It's the ultimate "ego trip" ... for very warped minds.

I mean, what kind of an "honest, intellectual discussion" can one possibly have ... when one participant is publicly known, but the other is "a shadowy, ANONYMOUS figure ..." -- obviously AFRAID to reveal even his identity, yet spring-loaded to attack the slightest perception of "weakness" in his opponent?

The pretense that, somehow, a "serious, SCIENTIFIC discussion" could be carried out under these bizarre circumstances--

Is a farce!

In setting up the Constitution, the Framers recognized that the SOLE deterrent to the old abuses of Europe, the "whispered innuendo in dark" -- where you could be accused of ANYTHING and (literally) dragged away ... and then, had to PROVE your innocence -- was backwards; that free men (and women) are INNOCENT 'til PROVEN guilty; that the "burden of proof" was NOT on the "accused" ... but on the "accuser"--

Who is impossible to fight ... when your accuser is, by calculated design, "anonymous ....

Shades of "hooded men and secret star chambers ..." -- from our own sad history ... where the "anonymous accuser" is the judge, the jury ... and ... the executioner.

Is someone NUTS?!

So, no, I have absolutely NOTHING to "apologize" for ... on my own page (!) -- and I will continue to eliminate ALL "agent provocateurs" ... whose REAL agenda is to make it IMPOSSIBLE for the overwhelming majority of honest folks (*sopme, ~15,000 now) who come here to have a serious, OPEN discussion ... in these increasingly critical and uncertain times!
Happy anniversary, Hoagland!

I suppose that is why it is called a "FAN" page - not a "ask me questions that might expose my bullshit to my groupies who might actually be able to do a little free thinking" page. If you raise any tricky questions let alone disagree with this giant of 21st century hyper-science, you must be a "troll".

My God, the shotgun full of quotation marks he uses when writing a post of any length drives me up the wall. If he ever wrote a paper suitable for academic publication the reviewers would have a field day with him. Even within the popular context of Dark Mission, I can only imagine how many pointless quotes the editors had him remove. Though I do find it hilarious that he quoted "fans" (a rare moment of clarity, perhaps?).

Hoagland's response to James is interesting in its content, as well. It's possible that this knee-jerk emotional reaction provides a truer image of RCH's opinion of himself than in some of the other accounts we get. His staggering ego is clearly on display in all cases, of course, but here we see some of the roots of it. RCH views his getting a job at CBS at a young age as some sort of validation of his genius. Therefore, he HAD to be on to something major when he first started looking at Cydonia. What may have been an honest mistake to begin with turned into a massive insidious conspiracy that now has so much "astonishing" evidence supporting it that no one can convince him otherwise.

Statements like these make me believe that he's not a conscious con artist; he really believes these things he's saying, he really believes he's discovered something amazing, and he is REALLY getting bitter in his old age that his genius will not be recognized in his lifetime.

I strongly agree with that comment, thanks for it. I'm sure at some level he sees the inconsistencies and absurdities that his theories have led to -- James's three sample questions are very good examples -- but because he's untrained in science he's able to persuade himself that they somehow don't really matter. He's in possession of A Greater Truth.

I've said on a few occasions Dick's gotten way too egotistical over the last few years - you only need look at how condescending he is to the "idiots who simply don't get it" (you know, when not telling you to "go figure it out for yourself"), and how amazed he is that people think they can have access to his material without paying good money for it, or how he thinks he deserves half a C2C show to himself as "science adviser", or how he basks in glory and adulation from his army of di-hard groupie fans whenever his predictions come right ie, Barry getting elected, or probes that may or may not have made it to mars, etc (not that he makes predictions of course -let alone correct ones- remember!)...

And yet it is these very things that give him good reason to feel "officially recognized" - he is after all one of the more well-known names on the pseudo-science/Project Camelot speaking circuit (albeit for endless mistakes and inaccuracies) AND he has 30,000 "fans" who sing the praises for Captain Enterprise 24/7 as well as go into fits of orgasm whenever he has 2mins on C2C - that in itself is cast-iron validation to his own warped mind (because the groupies know the score of what is REALLY going on out there!)...

And of course NatGeo or some accepted, academic science journal will never give him "official mainstream validation", and he'll probably never be talked about in the same breath as Einstein and Galileo because academic institutions are all in on the conspiracy to suppress the hyper-dimensional truth that only he knows... (although I bet you $19.50 he'd swap all his fans for 1 piece of official science-endorsement!!)

Alas, I think he is a self-obsessed egotist: a fan-appointed, self-promoting god of all things hyper-dimensional, who should be worshiped as such (whilst ignoring anything that contradicts this status), as well as also perhaps being rather bitter about what could have been if he wasn't seen as a "crackpot joke" in the mainstream (hence clinging on to that ultimate lifetime achievement of getting a job at CBS 40 odd years ago, and once having employment something remotely nasa-related).

Or to sum it up in 1 word: DELUDED.

Nah! I think he's just a desperate man, backed up against a wall in a back alley somewhere, with the debt collectors after his ass and nobody buying any of his books or videos. Plus, at his golden age, no pension or savings to show for his lifetime achievements. Plus the jealousy in his heart every time someone mentions how Von Daniken made so much money that he didn't worry about a major debunking every now and then.

Ever time I read one of Hoagie or Mike's rants, I'm reminded of this image. (If I ever figure out Photoshop, I might just put Hoagie's face on it)

As it turns out, banning folks like James has actually backfired on him. The page was a lot more active when the faithful had someone to defend their fearless leader against. IIRC, the anti-Concannon threads were some of the most active on the page.

Now that the place has been sanitized, it's become so dull that not even Hoagland can work up enough energy comment. The fans are mostly just re-posting stuff they see on Alex Jones' Website or looking at more "is it or isn't it?" UFO videos. Heck, not even Robin seems to bother with the page any more.

One last thing. No, the page doesn't really belong to Hoagland, it belongs to Face Book. They reserve the right to pull it at any time and for any reason. The only Website Hoagland "owns" is that 1995 retro site he named after a famous fictional star ship. The one he hasn't touched in almost 2 years. Looks like "his" Face Book page is headed in the same direction.

Maybe it's worth adding -- if it isn't screamingly obvious -- that Hoagland's reason for refusing to engage my questions is entirely dishonest. In referring to me as "a shadowy, ANONYMOUS figure ...obviously AFRAID to reveal even his identity" he means I had no profile picture and very little profile information (that was visible to him.) However, there have been several cases where he has similarly banned questioners who had quite visible profiles. Neville Parchemin, who utterly destroyed Hoagland's pseudo-statistical analysis of Elenin, comes to mind.

Anonymous said...

Neville refused to accept the "fact" that Elenin coming by at magic 19:50(ish) somewhere on the planet where it was September 11th(ish) somewhere on the planet could not be anything other than PRE-PLANNED by our ancestors 13,000 or 26,000 years ago, so that this spaceship could start the Occupy Movement with it's "consciousness-raising raygun" and *maybe* even had its occupants meet with humanity-saving, re-incarnated king Barry under the cover of darkness somewhere. Neville simply had to go. We can't have such absurd denial, with his "math calculation" and "logic reasoning" in the face of such irrefutable, incontrovertible, undeniable facts.

James, not to mention the fact that numerous fans, who don't use real names and who post images other than portraits, get free rein, once they worship humbly enough at the feet of the Big Man.

According to C2C Captain Enterprise will be back on the airwaves on the 2nd, bringing us "space news"... for about 30 seconds... I can hardly wait... ... I wonder what the "news" will be: space is cold? Nasa has discovered possible habitable planets a billion light years away? The universe is shaped in the exact likeness of Barry?

expat said...

I fear this is going to be worse, MUCH worse, than 30 seconds. Possibly 3 hours of TSOS (The Same Old Stuff). I'll review it if there's anything new.

Anonymous said...

3 hours?! Wow, if that's the case, his groupies must have spent quite a lot of time calling and emailing the radio station asking for their beloved leader to have the airwaves to himself... (either that or George Snore-y has absolutely nothing else to bring to the masses in the middle of the night)

Ironic, that how with 15,000 readers here, that there aren't more contributors, yet you continually delete my comments, same as Hoagland does.

Chris Lopes said...

Hoagland's obsession with James' identity has always been an exercise in misdirection. No, anonymous posters don't really bother him (particularly if they chose images of attractive models as their avatar) as long as the posters don't challenge him. You can actually pretend to be anyone you want as long as you tow the line.

In the real world, the fact that James always used scientific arguments that anyone could check, made his identity a mute point. He wasn't asking anyone to take his word for it, therefore no one had to judge what he was saying based on who he is.

Hoagland of course operates on the exact opposite principle. You must believe what he says because he's Richard C. Hoagland. You know, the guy who sat several chairs down from Cronkite 40 years ago. He's an "expert" in just about anything he needs to be an expert in. In other words, Hoagland never met an argument from authority (as long as HE was the authority) he didn't like.

Chris, James has a profile pic now!

Wow just came across this place and what a sad little place this is! It is essentially a hate site.
Have you got nothing more creative to be getting on with? very very sad.

Biological_Unit said...

there will be boots to asses here

expat said...

Anon: No, you've got it wrong. This is a science site. The hate is coming from the other direction. It is Mike Bara who has used words like moron, idiot, and douche-bag. It is Richard Hoagland who has written of "warped minds."

James Concannon said...

"Chris, James has a profile pic now!"

Yes I do. It's satirical.

Misti: >>....yet you continually delete my comments, same as Hoagland does. <<

Well, I'm not going to delete that comment, so much for "continually."

I deleted a comment-flood from you on the topic of "Orbs" a month ago, after specific requests from two regular commenters, and after your posts had already been up long enough to be seen by anyone interested.

I'm not banning posts about orbs, but it's not a subject of interest here so I feel justified in deleting a comment-flood on the topic when requested.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

Yeah, that's what Hoagland always says, too, "everybody want's you to shut up." Ironic that with your alleged 15,000 readers here, you take orders from all two of them.

What a Dick!

Trekker said...

Misti, twice you've mentioned a readership of 15,000 for this blog. Where did you find that number? I can't see it anywhere. Can you point it out?

Oh, looks like that was supposed to be a quote from Hoagland, but that isn't quite clear. I provided the quotation marks that are not used above in the main post of this thread.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

So are Ex Pat and James Concannon morphodite Siamese twins or just a couple of Dickless pricks?

expat said...

Misti: The quoted text is within blockquote tags but no doubt that is not totally clear on all platforms. Good point. Next time I have an extended quote I'll think about that.

PS. I don't respond to insults.

Trekker said...

So THAT'S where you got the figure, Misti? From a quote by Hoagland talking about himself? I would have thought the speaker was obvious, but it seems not!

Jiminy Oddbird said...

Which insult do you not respond to the most, the comparison of you to Dick Hoagland or to James Concannon?

Jiminy Oddbird said...

( All tormentation aside, I honestly look forward to your review of this. --MP )

Mars & Ancient Life
Date: 04-02-12
Host: George Noory
Guests:
Richard C. Hoagland, Cal Orey

Richard C. Hoagland spins an extraordinary 3-hour tale that will intertwine details of a destroyed Russian probe that was headed to Phobos, a new US Mars rover on its way to the Red Planet, long-suppressed evidence for ancient life on Mars, and the new film "John Carter [of Mars]."

First Hour: Author and earthquake sensitive Cal Orey talks about the connection between quakes and the strange sounds people have been hearing.

Biological_Unit said...

John Carter of Mars is not "our collective memory" RCH

This new Movie lost a huge amount of money by having a huge audience of empty seats.

BU,
That's what costs a happens when the movie costs a huge amount of money to begin with and the marketing guys spend all the ad money on hookers and blow.
