Well, that's fucking depressing, to be honest...

It must be quite the nice little earner to get on C2C to punt your new book. I'm guessing of course. I have no way of knowing except some hand waving guess work. But it does still have a large audience so perhaps it is worth an extra few grand to Mikey boy.

Hoagland would probably trot out some version of the Drake equation and tell us that an appearance on C2C was worth a "stunningly confirmatory" extra 19,500 copies sold.

Any guesses Expat ?

Sheer guess -- 3h on Noory's show is good for 4,000 copies. Dark Mission was exceptional -- that was probably a 15,000 copy boost. Hence the rise to #21 in the NYT list. NOT strictly speaking a best seller, but plenty to crow about.

Binaryspellbook said...

And crow he did. It was hideous.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

There is no official set number of book sales to designate a best seller. It's a relative figure to sales of other books within a given time frame.

Coast to Coast AM has a huge audience, and anyone is free to advertise on that program. If an author were to take out an ad, he would no doubt be invited on as a guest, and George Noory would be kissing HIS ass.

John Lear, for example.

Correct.

>> If an author were to take out an ad, he would no doubt be invited on as a guest, and George Noory would be kissing HIS ass.<<

That might be a very risky strategy, profit-wise. Not a bet I'd want to take.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

How expensive could it be; one brief ad per night? Seems to work for C-Crane. You don't need to pay Noory to read it. Hire a local pro.

My guess is that it will be a very temporary boost at best. Without the hook of an interesting mythology behind it, there isn't enough there there to sustain sales. I suppose that some interest could be generated by the controversy surrounding it (that might be what Noory was up to when Dr. Robbins was on), but Bara just isn't that interesting a guy all by himself.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

If even a hack like Bara were to advertise on small stations on the outskirts of big populations, with just enough watts to reach, he could do local morning shows all over the country, promoting local book signings for latter that same day, and make a killing, all across the country. Takes a wee bit of research and a lot of phone calls, and a hell of a lot of driving.

Overall ranking now less than 9,000.

Ironic that the only Kindle book selling better in Astrophysics & Space Science is A Brief History of Time, by an author who Bara has characterized as "a sad, broken man who has lost his way."

What on earth is a fairy story book doing in "Astrophysics & Space Science"?

Jiminy Oddbird said...

I first found a new hard back copy of Monuments of Mars, back in 1994, located in the anthropology section at Powell's Books in Portland, Orygun. Go figg'a?

expat said...

You're in Portland? Drop by Ristretto Coffee some morning and ogle my favorite literary bloggeuse, Nancy Rommelman.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

She seems cool. Haven't been through that burg in awhile, though. Powell's bookstore is an entire city block and two stories, including parking. I met Jim Lehrer and his wife there on their book tour, and he said that in all the many places they have travelled, there is no place as huge as Powell's.

expat said...

Nancy is very talented. She was a bad, bad girl in her Manhattan youth, too. That's VERY attractive.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

She looks younger today, than yesterday.

HAHAHAH!!

According to the ego-fluffer - sorry, sorry, "doctor robin" (and by doctor I mean an expert in water or vitamins or whatever it is that $4 diploma she managed to buy off a website 10 years ago covers), Captain Enterprise is extremely hard at work on the latest "paper" - after all, it's hard WORK that pays the bills, for all you dumb, mere-mortal peons demanding the Great Master engage you on bookface!!... Funny: I could have sworn it was openly begging for money from deluded disciples that paid the bils?!?!...

'HYPOcrite' springs to mind, not so much 'hyperdimensional'.

Oh - but whatever you do, get yourself to LA to hear his presentation!!!! No matter where you live, no matter what you have to do - everyone NEEDS to hear his astonishing information - I suggest even missing a meal or two or ten if you have to!!... (wait, I'm sure that sounds familiar...)

But what´s strange in Bara´s sales? Number one on the music charts, for instance, (Top ten songs, top forty in Spain, VH1Top of the pops, etc. ..) always seems to be rubbish ,as the same with TV programs, or "film blockbusters"and so.. the majority tastes often sucks ... There are exceptions, of course, but this isn´t one of them.

Anon,
It's funny, but I seem to remember a time when Hoagland was (or claimed to be) earning a living while he was chatting up the lonely grandma types on his FB page. Almost every day he'd be dazzling the faithful with stories of yet another interview for some Russian TV group, or some project that was coming out Real Soon Now. That Hoagland was a rock star who had time to chat with (and delete) the little people. This guy is some cranky old dude who's yelling at the kids to get off his lawn.

jourget said...

Hoagland's giving two talks at the Conscious Life Expo-one on Curiosity and how Obama will probably announce life on Mars before the election (90 minutes long, $45.00 admission), and one on the May 2012 annular eclipse and all the alignment foofaraw that goes with it (120 minutes, $55.00 admission). Seriously. That's how much it costs. When they'll be on YouTube within a week or so afterward. Christ, how many people are out there that still don't know how he's going to spin this crap? Expat, do you have any idea how much take-home Hoagland might get from each ticket?

expat said...

I'm going to guess close to 50%. And those things are quite well attended. If he sticks to those timings I'm a Chinaman.

astroguy said...

And Bara says that *I'm* paid to spread *my* disinfo from NASA? Yeah ... he makes a hell of a lot more than I do from the promotion of his stuff (esp. considering that I make $0).

Now eagerly awaiting the announcement of "Ancient Aliens on Nibiru"... Ah, the suspense!

Six months from greenlight to store shelves. I can see why Adventures Unlimited Press has a reputation for quantity of words rather than quality of content from the works of their stable of authors. I invite everyone to take a look at the staggering revelations for sale on the company's website:

http://www.adventuresunlimitedpress.com/

Mike's gonna fit right in. I wonder why Hoagland never went this route? He's certainly capable of putting out enough words.

Chris Lopes said...

jourget,
Hoagland's problem is that's he's usually too lazy to actually sit down and write anything that long. When he does manage to produce anything, it's usually incomprehensible (on purpose) crap.

expat,
Given the quick timeline on the next book, maybe Bara is trying to beat Hoagland to the bookstores with a Mars book. Since most of the material will be from DM (and Monuments of Mars) again, that would make it quite the buzz kill for Hoagland.

Jiminy Oddbird said...

So now having become so thoroughly familiarized with DM & Bara's new book, are you able to discern the difference in the relative contributions from each of both authors, Hoagland and Bara, and if so, what is it?

jourget said...

Chris,

With Ancient Aliens (the TV show) already heading into its fifth season, no one can be sure how long its popularity will last; maybe both Bara and the AUP guys want to squeeze in the next book as soon as possible for sales reasons, given the implied connection to the series and the current popularity of things Mars after the success of Curiosity.

What I love about it is that one can't step more squarely into Hoagland territory than by writing a book about ancient ruins on Mars. That's gonna sting, especially after Hoagland claimed on C2C that pretty much everything in Dark Mission was his research, and that Mike just provided writing skills. Is that a petard I hear?

expat said...

Misti: All the passages using unnecessary emphasis and inappropriate "double quotes" are Hoagland. The rest are Bara. Dark Mission started off as majority Hoagland. As the book went on its dreary and inaccurate way, it was more and more Bara.

Bara may be the most science-ignorant author writing non-fiction today, but he certainly can churn out the words.

Chris Lopes said...

jourget,

I hadn't considered the connection to the show, but it does make sense. The book titles do remind one of the program, and that's not a coincidence.

As to Hoagland vs. Bara, yeah I'm sure there's a part of Mike that's saying "F U Dick!" as he's typing away. Hoagie's problem is that he can't compete with Bara in the production of readable work. Mike has managed to put out more books in 7 years than Hoagland managed in 4 decades.

That's been Hoagland's problem from the beginning. There are others in the "alternative research" community who are just better and more productive writers than he is, so he's had to make his name with performances (live, on DVD, and on the radio) rather than writing. That in turn has led him to create an ever evolving mythology to keep the performance fresh. Unfortunately for Hoagland, that mythology has become so convoluted and self contradictory that it's down right tedious to listen to.

Esteban Navarro said...

Fortunately, none of them has been published in Spain. BTW Have you heard about the new offer of one million dollars by the international skeptical circle who can prove something to say in the "paranormal field", or ET UFOS included "ruins"?

Moreover, I think you're absolutely right, Chris.

Chris Lopes said...

BTW, Packing For Mars is a fun book about human factors research at NASA.

Kissing Ass? It is mutual masturbation. George Noory would attend the opening of letter if it got him the green.

I have seen the Jose Escamilla premier video of Moon Rising. George even went to that for about 30 seconds.

If people are so dumb to think that by having George I believe in Angels Noory gives anything credibility then let the suckers pay.

Paracast.. why go on that? Gene Stein... lost it. Is just in it for the money. I know people have to pay the bills, but the amount of ads on that show makes it unbearable to listen to. Plus he blocked me from his forum for asking legit questions without an F bomb or tard in sight.

But of course the questions were concerning an issue about his handling of of a topic.. Bang I am a Troll.. The standard get out of jail free card nowadays it seems.

Oops slipped out of character there.
